Description
Iron has a long history of symbolism in the concepts of magnetism, strength, fortitude, and courage. For instance, Iron is the alchemical metal of Mars. It is the most common metallic element in the universe, and is ubiquitous in our solar system, soil, and within the history of human development. In this class, we explore the difference between heme and non-heme iron, and the variation in transport pathways that allow the body to use these two forms. Found everywhere in nature, foods and botanicals contain nutritional iron that supports a healthy level of functional and sustained iron in the body. Iron is essential for transport of oxygen via red blood cells, conversion of blood sugar to energy, and provides crucial building blocks for production of enzymes, amino acids, hormones and neurotransmitters. Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency. Health challenges may be caused by both too much, too little, and genetic mutations that influence iron availability, uptake and utilization. Botanicals contain a wide range of nutrients that support Iron levels and use by the body.
Open to all levels from beginner to advanced.
